How We Build a Wine Barrel Fire Table

Back to Blog

Every fire table starts with the barrel. We source authentic wine barrels — the real thing, not decorative reproductions — from wineries that have finished using them for aging. Each barrel has already lived a full life, and you can see it in the wood: the deep staining from years of wine contact, the weathered staves, the hand-stamped markings from the winery.

Once we have a barrel we're happy with, we start by inspecting every stave for cracks, rot, or structural weakness. A barrel that looks great on the outside might have hidden issues, so we take our time here. Any compromised staves get replaced with matching wood before we go further.

The top of the barrel is removed and the interior is cleaned out thoroughly. We then build a custom steel insert that sits inside the barrel and holds the burner assembly. The insert is sized to fit snugly and is welded to be structurally sound — this is what the granite or stone top will rest on.

The stone top is cut to size and fitted with a center opening for the burner. We use granite, slate, or other natural stone depending on the customer's preference. Each slab is unique, and we take care to orient it so the most interesting grain or pattern faces up.

The UL-listed propane burner is installed in the center opening, connected to a standard propane fitting. We test every burner before the piece ships. An optional tempered glass windguard can be added around the burner opening — it keeps the flame steady in a breeze and adds a finished look.

Finally, the barrel gets its finish. We offer several stain options, from a natural oil finish that lets the wood's character show through, to darker stains that give a more dramatic look. Every piece gets multiple coats with sanding between each one.

The whole process takes several days from start to finish. We don't rush it. Every fire table that leaves our shop is something we're proud to put our name on.
