5 Ways to Build an Outdoor Living Space You'll Actually Use

Back to Blog

The best outdoor spaces have one thing in common: they feel like a room, not just a yard. Here are five principles we've seen work well for customers who've shared photos of their setups with us.

First, anchor the space with a focal point. A fire table is the obvious choice — it draws people in, gives them something to gather around, and extends the usability of the space into cooler evenings. But it could also be a water feature, a large planter, or even a statement piece of furniture. The key is having something that says 'this is the center of the space.'

Second, define the edges. An outdoor rug, a low retaining wall, or even just a change in surface material (from grass to pavers, for example) tells people where the 'room' begins and ends. Without defined edges, a patio can feel like it's just floating in the yard.

Third, think about layers of seating. A mix of chairs, stools, and a bench gives people options and makes the space feel more relaxed and lived-in. Our barrel rocker chairs pair well with lower stools or side tables that let people set down a drink.

Fourth, add lighting. String lights, lanterns, or low-voltage path lighting transform a space after dark. If you have a fire table, the flame itself provides a lot of ambiance — but having some additional light sources means the space is usable even when the fire isn't going.

Fifth, don't over-furnish. It's tempting to fill every corner, but outdoor spaces breathe better with a little room to move. A few well-chosen pieces — a fire table, two or three chairs, a side table — is often more inviting than a crowded arrangement.

The goal is a space where people naturally want to linger. Get that right and the furniture almost doesn't matter — though we'd argue a Barrel Rocker piece doesn't hurt.
