Why We Use Reclaimed Wine Barrels

When people ask why we use reclaimed wine barrels instead of just buying new wood, the answer is simple: you can't fake what a barrel has been through.

A wine barrel spends years — sometimes decades — holding wine, whiskey, or spirits. During that time, the wood absorbs the liquid, expands and contracts with temperature changes, and develops a patina that's completely unique. The grain darkens. The staves take on subtle curves. The wood becomes something you can't buy at a lumber yard.

Beyond the aesthetics, reclaimed barrels are a genuinely sustainable choice. These barrels have already been manufactured and used. By giving them a second life as furniture, we're keeping them out of the waste stream and reducing the demand for new lumber.

We source our barrels from wineries and cooperages that are retiring them from service. Each barrel comes with its own history — sometimes you can still see the winery's stamp or the vintage year burned into the wood. We think that's worth preserving, not hiding.

Not every barrel is suitable for furniture. We inspect each one carefully and reject any that have structural issues, excessive rot, or damage that can't be repaired. The ones that make the cut are the ones with real character — the kind of wood that makes people stop and ask questions when they see the finished piece.
